課程概述 |
本學期將近三分之二週次聚焦於新聞英文，目標是訓鍊學生以英文做為吸收新知的主要工具，並對當前世界動態具有一定的敏銳度。上課形式包括老師講課（lecture）及閱讀討論課（reading session）；在這段期間，每週課堂另闢有聽力訓練時間。這一大段的評量方式為期中考，範圍涵蓋講課所有內容、閱讀討論課教授的新聞文章以及課堂聽力教材的詞彙。
其餘週次則教授聽力及口語發表技巧。這部分除上課外，會留有時間讓學生自習、做研究，評量方式包括聽力作業及期末口頭報告。
此外，學期當中每人必須與助教進行兩次個別談話，討論指定的文章，助教會根據學生的準備程度評分。
本課程為全英文上課，出席率與上課學習態度十分重要。

課程目標 |
The purpose of this course is twofold: to keep you current with what is going on in the world, and to help you improve your listening and speaking proficiency. Nearly two-thirds of the weeks will be devoted to news media English; during these weeks, there will also be listening activities independent of the news media English sessions. The rest of the semester will proceed as workshops on listening and oral presentation techniques. In addition, there will be two mandatory individual sessions with the TA. Please note that pretty much everything is to be considered toward your final grade: from your attendance to your individual meetings with the TA. |

課程要求 |
Regular attendance. Unexcused absence from three classes will result in zero point on the “attendance, preparation, and participation” part of your final grade, whereas unexcused absence from five classes will result in a failing grade.
Preparation and participation. Prior preparation is required for the reading sessions. Class participation is essential.
Midterm exam. The exam will cover all the lectures on news media English, all the assigned news articles, and vocabulary in the class listening materials. The format includes vocabulary test, paraphrasing, and short-answer questions.
Homework. You are to watch a set of videos and write summaries of them. The materials will be provided in due course.
Oral presentation at the end of the semester. Prepare a presentation of 3-4 minutes on the topic we discuss during Weeks 13 & 14. You may choose to respond to the articles we read for class, but you are strongly encouraged to conduct some research on the subject. A day after your presentation, you are to submit on NTU COOL a list of references you have consulted for your presentation.
Individual sessions with the TA. You are to meet with the TA twice during the semester, each for 10 minutes. Two articles will be assigned. Read them beforehand and tell the TA what you have learned from them. |
